Poem Winners

National Schools Project Poetry Contest Winners

Mrs. White submitted Haiku poems written by students in third and fifth grade  during their class writing time with her.  I am pleased to congratulate the following winners of the Young American Poetry Digest contest from the poems submitted.  The following fifth grade student’ poems were selected for publication pending parent permission:  Doug Baker, Devin Branstner, Jay Clark, Ty Schramm, Lilly Sanchaz, Isabella Roberts, Haylee Houseman, Hope Kaydus, Blake Motley, Alicyn Harbaugh, and Rebekah Emmert.  The following third grade students poems were selected for publication pending parent permission: Sydney Turley, Lucy Thompson, Ariana Tarver, CJ Peters, Aliyah Roberts, Brody Sonneborn, Kaden Mansfield, Isabel McMinn, Connor Bettis, and Bryson Harbaugh.

 

You can check out each student’s poem below.  A Haiku poem has a three line structure with 5 syllables in the first line, seven syllables in the second line, and five syllables in the third line.  The poem is normally about nature. 

 

Fifth Grade Poems:

The cat waits for prey                                  A baby rabbit

Quietly climbing the tree                              Is jumping for a carrot

Ready to attack birds                                    Because it is small

Water flowing fast                                        Birds sing and bugs fly

Pigeons drinking in the creek                      Wind blows and water flows

Enjoy the water                                             Leaves fall flowers grow tall

See giant bobcat                                            Dolphins are splashing

Moves like a shadow through frost            Turtles swim through warm waters

Third Grade Poems:

Monkeys are funny                                       Storms have rain and clouds

They swing from vines around                   There is no sun peeking through

Eating bananas                                              Lightning flashes hard

Kittens are funny                                          kittens are funny

They run away from the dogs                     kittens are really powerful

They dash on the floor                                 and they are hyper
