County School Facility Sales Tax Vote on November 4th

July 29, 2014

On November 4th, the question “Shall a retailer’s occupation tax and service occupation tax (commonly referred to as a “Sales Tax”) be imposed in the Macoupin County at a rate of 1% to be used exclusively for school facility purposes?” will appear on the voting ballot. School boards in Macoupin County did have to pass a resolution to have this question on the ballot for voters that covered at least 50% of the student population. The Northwestern School District currently houses approximately 4.5% of the county students, meaning 4.5% of all new monies collected, if this were to pass by majority vote on the ballot, would come to Northwestern. This comes out to approximately $100,000 annually. The two largest districts in regards to county student population are Carlinville (19.7%) and Gillespie (17.4%) followed by North Mac (17%).
